The study of personality has been a subject of great interest in psychology for decades. Researchers
have employed various theories and models to understand the diversity and complexity of personality traits.
Objective: The aim was to determine the relationship between personality traits and grit in American taekwondo
practitioners. Methodology: A quantitative, quasi-experimental, and descriptive-correlational study was conducted
with a sample of (n=470) American taekwondo practitioners. The Mini-IPIP instrument was used for assessing
personality traits, and the Grit Scale was used for measuring grit. Results: The athletes' grit scored a median of 4.00,
suggesting that this population exhibits high levels of perseverance, in line with the grit scale. Additionally, this
population stood out for its high perseverance in effort. Furthermore, it was identified that the trait most strongly
associated with taekwondo practitioners was openness to experience (ME 4.00 RIC P25=3.50; P75=4.25), while the
trait with the least association was neuroticism (ME 2.50 RIC P25=2.25; P75=3.00). Statistically significant
correlations were found in all traits except for the trait of agreeableness. Conclusion: It was finally determined that a
significant relationship exists between all personality traits (except agreeableness) and grit in this population. It is
also noteworthy that neuroticism was the only trait that showed a negative relationship with grit. On the other
hand, it was observed that taekwondo practitioners most strongly identified with the trait of openness to
experience.
